A njuman Arts College started functioning on the first floor of Anjuman Hami-e-Muslimeen‘s Islamia Anglo Urdu High School building on Monday, the 1 st of July, 1968 with exactly one hundred students in PUC I Arts class, after a brief, informal inaugural function attended by the members of management.

The first five years were full of arduous work but the dividends were equally rewarding, in course of time. Though formative years they were full of academic activities. They include the introduction of arts in 68-69, science in 69-70 and commerce in 70-71 The Duration of P.U.C education being one year at that time and affiliated to the university , it was compulsorily on the part of the college authorities to introduce Degree level classes in Arts, Science and Commerce faculties respectively, with the following subjects.

English ,Kannada, Hindi, Urdu, and Arabic.

History, Economics, Political Science

Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Mathematics and Commerce subjects.

Later on Computer Science, Indian Constitution and Karnataka Economy were added at Degree Level.

The memorable events of the formative years were the commissioning of the National Cadet Corp sub unit in the college and the publication of the college miscellany. Down the years, the N.C.C sub-unit has brought many laurels through participation in the All India Leadership Camp, the Trekking camps, the National Integration Camp and Republic Day Parades.

It has undertaken social service activities like village adoption, a afforestation, blood donation, drive against illiteracy, anti dowry anti leprosy drive, cash collection for blind association of India and observing traffic week assistance to flood affected people and it continues to participate in these social activities .Later on National service scheme unit was innagurated with 100 volunteers to feel the pulse of rural, urban and national socio-ecconomic , cultural and environmental problems to enable to contribute their might in the nation building.

The College building was constructed in record time and the college was shifted to the new campus, when a 25-acre plot was procured on the picturesque hillock. In the day to day functioning of the college, in the new campus, planning forum and language association are formed to conduct the usual literary and extra curricular activities to awaken the intellectual artistic, cultural and leadership talent s of the students. To cater to the needs of changing times and to broden the intellectuals horizon of the students, the tradition of seminars was introduced in the year 1984-85. the scope of seminar extends to all the three faculties.Distinguished and eminent guests and invitees and delegates from other colleges grace the occasions.

1996. Mr Khursheed Alam Khan, Governor of Karnataka, was the distinguished chief guest, along with Dr S.Gopal, Vice Chancellor, Mangalore University , Mr S.M Yahya, former Karnataka Minister and Mr C.M.Ibrahim, former Central Minister, as guest of honour.

The college library is an intellctual arena for the cross fertilization of ideas, supplementing to class room lecturers. It has about 20,000 books, including reference books , encyclopedias, year books, atlases ,biographical sources, hand books etc, besides over 100 back volumes of periodicals and popular magazines, about a dozen daily newspapers and receives more then 25 gifts journals and news letters from various organizations every year. Separate reading room facilities are provided to boys, girls and staff members.

The college laboratories are well equipped, with all the necessary infrastructure, including the latest and up-to-date instruments, necessary mechanical devices and refrigeration facilities. The museum in the Biology laboratory gets enriched every year with addition from the yearly botanical and zoological collections of students through study tours. College has botanical garden which is of it's unique kind for the district.

Self financed well furnished Air-conditioned computer lab was established in March 2003 with twenty new Pentium 4 machines (High Configuration) to facilitate the students. The departments has various new software, two printers of which one is Epson colour Inkjet printer and another is a dot matrix printer. The department has also Internet facility.

Physical education has been an integral part of academic education in the college. Sports and games are bringing fame and name to the students as well as the college. The spacious gymkhana ground, which was inaugurated in 1982-83, provides opportunities to the students, who have been bringing laurels in volleyball, badminton and cricket. It also provides indoor games facilities for trainees and players for table tennis, chess and carom including girl participants.

The college has been receiving salary from the State Government, besides substantial financial assistance from University Grants Commission, New Delhi . It is permanently affiliated to the Karnatak University , Dharwad and has been accredited for a period of five years by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council, an autonomous body of the University Grants Commission. Majority of faculty has over ten's years experience and has undergone requisite number of orientation and refresher courses. There are fourteen Professors and eight Readers, amongst over two dozen of academic staff, out of which about fifty percent are holding M.Phil qualification. Presently there are three Doctors of philosophy, out of which two are appointed by Karnatak Univesity, Dharwad, as guides for Ph.D students. In addition, guest Lecturers are invited from other colleges and universities to enlighten the students about the latest trends and for vocational guidance.
